Kudos to Kristin Harmel, the author of “The Paris Daughter” for writing such a Memorable and Thought-provoking novel. The Genres for this novel are Historical Fiction, World War Two, Adult Fiction, and Women’s Fiction. The author vividly transports the reader back to France during the war World War Two. and we can visually sense the tragedy and devastation of bombings, and the fear and loss of lives. One can see both the beauty and ugliness of war. The author describes her dramatic and colorful characters as complex and complicated during these times. There are contrasts of betrayal, loss, and loyalty, courage. I appreciate the author’s use of ART to express many of the emotions.
Some of the women during the Nazi occupation were faced with making impossible decisions. The children had to be protected, and all mothers had to worry at what cost. Elise, a sculptor, married to an artist, and Juliette and her husband, who own a book store, are close friends. Juliette promises Elise that she will take care of her baby daughter if anything happens. Ruth, a Jewish mother, has decided to send her children away for protection. Can you imagine a war, where a mother is faced with such cruelty?
As the war is coming to an end, Elise goes back to get her daughter, but finds that the bookstore was bombed, and has to try to locate Juliette. I highly recommend this heart-breaking, emotional novel to others.
