Maren Cooper, the Author of “Finding Grace” has written a bold, contemporary, and controversial story. I appreciate how the author vividly describes the scenery, and her dramatic characters. The author describes the characters as complex, complicated, dysfunctional, quirky, and flawed. The author discusses toxic relationships, honesty and communication, betrayal, the importance of family, friends, community, love and hope. Also mentioned is the importance of support for mental health issues.
Charles and Carolyn come from unconventional backgrounds, and marry. Carolyn’s obsession and goals in life surround her need to be free, and follow birds. Charles was an orphan, and obsesses in having a family, and tricks Carolyn into getting pregnant. Carolyn insists that she wants to be free as a bird, and that Charles will have to bring up the child. True to her work, when she has a daughter, Grace, Charles is left to bring their daughter up.
Grace is brought up with both love and the feeling of abandonment. Her parent’s toxic relationship causes many tragic consequences. I would highly recommend this coming of age and thought-provoking novel to others.
