WOW! M Hendrix, the author of “The Chaperone” has written an amazing book that is just out of this world. I loved everything about this novel. The genres are Dystopia, Mystery, Thriller, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Young Adult and Fiction. To quote M Hendrix, “Like every young woman in New America, Stella knows the rules: Deflect attention, Abstain from sin, Navigate the world with care, Give obedience, Embrace purity, and respect your chaperone.”
The author vividly describes landscape and scenery of New America and the dramatic characters. The characters are complex, complicated, and flawed. Stella, the protagonist of the story, is searching for the truth and to be free. When Stella’s beloved Chaperone, Sister Helen dies, she is worried if the new Chaperone can fill her shoes. The leaders assign chaperones to keep young women safe. The women also know the importance of “the rules”. Stella questions why girls and boys have different classes, and why they can’t touch. Young girls in high school are given courses to prepare them for marriage. Stella is a senior, and her parents are allowing visitiations with men, to hopefully secure a husband. Why is it that bright young girls don’t make it to college? Stella is starting to question many things.
Stella is prepared to discover what the truth is at any cost. She faces danger and possibly death. The author written a well developed novel, with a creative, original story. I highly recommend this thoughtprovoking and memorable story to other readers. I hope that there are other books to continue this story!
