Kristy Woodson Harvey, the Author of “The Summer of Songbirds,” has written a heartfelt and compassionate novel about sisterhood, friendships, and family. This brings up special memories from when I played with visiting cousins and special friends. I remember going to the Boardwalk in Far Rockaway and seeing the fireworks, playing the different games for prizes, and having a blueberry cheese knish. My friends and I rode our bicycles without helmets and used a key for our roller skates. We played punch ball in the street and squash against my house or played potsy on my driveway. I do wish some of my friends were still alive. We were best friends and shared secrets. This is how I relate to Kristy Woodson Harvey’s novel.

I loved everything about “The Summer of Songbirds.” The author vividly describes the campgrounds, the lake, the trees, sailing, and nature all around. The author also describes her colorful and vivid characters as complex, complicated, loyal, resourceful, and creative. Three young girls, Daphne, Lanier, and Mary Stuart, form a bond at camp that continues through adulthood. When Daphne’s Aunt June is on the verge of losing the camp the girls went to, the girls band together to try and save “Camp Holly Springs.” The three friends endured family tragedies and broken hearts and celebrated wonderful occasions together.

I appreciate the nostalgic memories and the wonderful story, and I highly recommend this delightful and entertaining story to others.
