Penny Jackson, the Author of “My Daughter’s Boyfriends, A Short Story Collection,” has written a unique and thought-provoking fictional book. There are various coming-of-age short stories with different characters, settings, and emotional feelings. These are fictional stories, but the first story I read, “My Daughter’s Boyfriends,” actually had me feeling that this was a memoir or non-fiction story. I was pulled in and felt it was reality, and then I realized all the stories were fictional. In one story, the background was set during the “Son of Sam” era, and the protagonist had fear. Another story is set in Jamacia, where the main character crosses the line between the hotel where she is staying and the area where the island people live.
I appreciate how the author vividly describes the settings, events, and characters. Many of these young women had to show growth and self-worth. Some had to make decisions. This format of short stories is perfect for viewing a variety of personalities and emotional experiences. I would recommend this thought-provoking book to others.
