“The Keeper of Hidden Books” by Madeline Martin is an intriguing and captivating Historical Novel during World War Two in Poland. The theme throughout this well-written and developed story is saving books in Libraries in Poland, which represents freedom, from the approaching Germans and Nazis, whose goal was to destroy the civilization, cultural information, national pride, freedom, and education. Books are essential in society, and during World War Two, the Nazis wanted many books destroyed. The author has written a well-researched novel and vividly describes the tragic scenes of war, death, and destruction. The author describes the characters as complex and complicated during this devastating time. There is a sense of good and evil.

Zofia is obsessed with books and learning. She loves her book group that is reading books that Germany has banned. Janina is Jewish and is Zofia’s best friend. When the Nazis come to Warsaw, the Jewish people are sent to ghettos and rounded up. The Nazis want all books in the library that Zofia works in collected and destroyed. Zofia is determined to save as many books as possible at any cost. She also tries to help Janina and her family.

Zofia joins others to fight for freedom. This is an amazing, memorable, and thought-provoking novel that I highly recommend to others. This is based on a true story. I love how the author discusses the importance of books to people. The author mentions the importance of peace, freedom, family, friends, love, and hope.
