“Henderson House” by Caren Simpson McVicker is an enchanting and delightful novel I highly recommend to other readers. Do you ever think that a house is speaking to you? This grandiose boarding house has all the “feels” of “home” and hosts a cast of quirky characters. This fictional novel has a feel of magical essence through color and emotions. The timeline for this story is set in the early 1940s in Oklahoma.
I love how Caren Simpson McVicker vividly describes the setting and the characters. The different colors and scents of flowers and homemade cooking add a special feel. There is a “family feel.” Mrs. Henderson is the landlord and cook, providing balance, reason, and stability despite her unusual “gifts.” The Blackwell family borders and comes with their baggage of secrets. If and when these secrets are revealed, there will be a chain of disturbing consequences. One of the newest boarders is Mr. Davis, who brings a special charm to the house. The other borders fit in well.
The author discusses the importance and roles of family, friends, and neighbors. She also mentions the importance of honesty and communication. I appreciate that older people get the opportunity to have relationships. I love that the author provides a pet dog; that is wonderful emotional support. Sometimes there is an opportunity for change and growth, and it is up to the person to find when that is. This was an enjoyable and thought-provoking novel.
