Wow! “The Paris Assignment” by Rhys Bowen is a powerful, poignant, and intriguing Historical Fiction novel set during World War Two. There is espionage, betrayals, and tragedy set during this timeline. The setting takes place in England, France, and Australia. The author has written a well-developed and well-researched novel that vividly describes the devastation of World War Two. The author vividly describes the landscape, scenery, and her dramatic characters. During this time, some characters are “good” vs. “evil.” The author describes her dramatic characters as complex and complicated. Some are courageous and brave and fight for freedom. Some fight for revenge.
The protagonist, Madeline Grant, has lived in London but speaks both English and French. She meets her husband, Giles while studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, and they have a son, Olivier. When war breaks out in France, Giles stays in France to fight with the Resistance. Madeline is teaching in England. When Olivier is gone after a tragedy, Madeline is recruited by the Ministry to help during the war. She arrives in France, hoping to find Giles and fight the Germans.
Madeline must be brave, resourceful, and courageous to deal with what lies ahead. I highly recommend this captivating, emotional, and heartfelt novel to others.
