“Tinderbox: One Family’s Story of Adoption, Neurodiversity, and Fierce Love” by Lynn Alsup is a memorable, thought-provoking and impressive memoir. This heartfelt, and poignant non-fiction book demonstrates the courage strength, faith, hope, resilience and love that a family must have to be able to thrive through many obstacles. I appreciate how the author shares her emotional feelings and the challenges that she and her husband faced.
The author and her husband weren’t able to biologically have children, so they adopted three girls. Their first daughter, Clare was adopted from Haiti, and had a difficult time adjusting. Through the years, the author describes Clare’s temper tantrums, defiance, and dangerous behavior. When Clare tells her mother that she wants to kill herself, there is a long journey through a psychiatric hospital, and residential placements. Through all of this, and raising two other daughters with problems, Lynn Alsup looks to prayer and research to find a way to cope and survive as a family.
I highly recommend this amazing, thought-provoking memoir to others. There is uncertainty and problems in life, and the positivity that emanates from this book is remarkable. This certainly is a helpful and informative book, that I learned many things from.
