“Of Mud & Honey” by Roxana Trabulsi is an intriguing, captivating and poignant Historical Fiction novel. This is a well-written novel that vividly describes the political climate and difficulties in Aden, Yemen in 1967. The author describes her characters as complicated and complex. There is evidence of both good and evil. This novel feels like a memoir, and I found myself emphasizing and sympathizing with the main protagonists.
After British control, and exiting the country, various groups and Communists took over. Dara and Silloo found themselves imprisoned in their own country. Silloo was under house arrest with her children and mother in law, and Dara’s family business was taken, and Dara awaited for trial in a prison. They were harassed and verbally abused and tortured. The couple prayed they would survive, and get together again. It was hard for them to believe that such things could happen in their own country.
This is based on a true story, and the author shows the tragedy of a country that is torn, and what happens when freedom is taken away. The author also discusses the importance of fighting for your rights, and independence. The author discusses the importance of family, hope and love. I would highly recommend this book.
