“My Father’s Burning in Hell” by Mia McDaniel is a poignant and heartbreaking memoir. The author describes her dysfunctional and toxic family dynamics. The daughter of a narcissistic father and a self-absorbed mother finds life gets more complicated when a cousin from Israel comes to live with them. Some of the events that the author describes are quite disturbing, and I appreciate that the author is brave enough to share them.

This memoir reminds me of a Psychology course where the Professor asked us, “Do you think you can be a better parent than your parents were to you?” This is something that the author does deal with. Nothing was good enough, no matter how the author tried to please her mother and father. There was one time when the author had to go to the dentist alone and had 26 cavities. It wasn’t a case of not having money or insurance; it was not convenient for her parents to get her to a dentist.

The author mentions the importance of therapy, believing in yourself, the importance of family, friends, love, encouragement, and hope. I would recommend this thought-provoking novel.
