Michelle Dowd the Author of “Forager: Field Notes for Surviving a Family Cult” has written a heartfelt, thought-provoking and captivating memoir. This is nonfiction book based on the author’s notes and recollections of being brought up in a cult, founded by her Grandfather. The Grandfather wanted his followers to be prepared for the worst or end of times, and had them use “survival techniques”. Michelle Down has learned about anything that grows on the mountains, or lower lands where she resides.

The author describes plantlife and wildlife that can be eaten to survive. Certain parts of trees, and plants are safe, and others are poisonous. Michelle Down writes how she felt emotionally deprived as well as forcing to be resourceful. She learned to trust animals more than people. The author’s mother was a complicated and complex woman. Although the mother wouldn’t win an award for “Mother of the Year”, the author has dedicated this book to her.

Michelle Dowd was sick for a while, and was in a hospital, and had to learn to survive there as well. The author realized she wanted to break free from this life, and had the courage to leave. I would highly recommend this unusual memoir.
