“The Making of Genevieve” by Judy Lannon is a captivating and intriguing story dealing with Genevieve’s secrets, family, living and dying. This is the book that follows “Nine Days”, and can be read alone, but I suggest that you do read “Nine Days”, to get more understanding and information. The author writes with insight and compassion. The genres for this book are Women’s Fiction, Marriage and Divorce, Family Drama, and Women’s Literary Fiction.

In “Nine Days”, Judy Lannon describes Genevieve as a force to be dealt with. She is narcissistic and extremely vain. In “The Making of Genevieve”, the author vividly describes Genevieve as a teenager, and her early and later adult years. Genevieve is in her nineties, when she shares many of her memories. She was obsessed with her friend Nicky, who spent summers in Newport, Rhode Island. I love the descriptions of the waves, and the beach. The waves seem to be symbolic with Genevieve’s life. Nicky disappoints and betrays Genevieve, and she then marries Michael. Michael does go to fight during World War Two, and comes back with PTSD, and relies on alcohol to get him through life. Genevieve and his family are difficult to deal with.

Genevieve has been keeping secrets for years from her family, and hasn’t been able to deal with the consequences. It is only on her deathbed, that she does wonder if she should have made better choices. I appreciate the significant and relevant issues that the author discusses, PTSD, alcoholism, honesty, communication, love and hope. I would recommend this thought-provoking novel.
