Sheila Athens, the Author of May Van Dorn’s Perfect Storm” has written a captivating and intriguing novel. This is the perfect title with “Storm” being very symbolic in what is the female protagonist, Mae Van Dorn’s personal and professional life, and the Category Five Hurricane that causes havoc in Florida where Mae Van Dorn is currently living. The genres for this novel are: Southern Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, and Single Women’s Fiction. The author vividly describes the southern climate, the manners, (and lack of them) the food, the homes, and colorful, dramatic, and quirky characters.
Mae Van Dorn has been disappointed and discouraged in her dealing with people and her career. After a betrayal from her boyfriend, and a disaster at work, Mae is invited to stay with her estranged brother. Mae feels that she has no choice, because of lack of funds, and no work. Mae doesn’t trust anyone because of being hurt and secrets. In this new community, Mae meets a variety of complicated and complex characters, and realizes that some people are good, kind and helpful people. I appreciate that Sheila Athens brings different emotions, personalities, and stresses the importance of honesty, trust, good communication, hope and love. I enjoyed this story and highly recommend this.
