I appreciate that Marlene M. Bell, lists the cast of characters in a page at the beginning and describes them. The author vividly describes the dramatic characters as complex, complicated and very suspicious.
When Chef and Cookbook Author Laura Harris goes to visit her mentor,Hattie Stenberg, in the small town of Stenberg, she takes note that something seems off. Hattie, once a World War Two pilot, and one of the matriarchs in town, isn’t feeling well and seems frail. A young neighbor with an attitude seems to be both hovering and assisting Hattie, and convinces Laura to let Hattie rest. Laura first leaves for the night, but something makes her return to see her friend and mentor. Laura listens for Hattie’s dog, and finds Hattie in the groundkeeper’s house and bed, dead. Laura notices bruises and suspects this to be a homicide. There are many collectibles and expensive heirlooms in the main house.
When the will is read, it seems that Laura is the beneficiary and inherits Hattie’s wealthy estate. There are secrets, twists and turns, and discoveries of other characters and their motives. The Police suspect Laura. As Laura tries to clear her name, threats, calls, messages , and danger surround her. I highly recommend this intense and suspenseful novel.
