Kate Storey, the Author of “The Memory Library” has written an intriguing and captivating novel. The genres for this book are British Literature, Contemporary Literature, Women’s Fiction, Contemporary Family, Adult Fiction, and Fiction. In this well written novel, the author is an amazing storyteller, who shows the importance of books, literacy and the written word. The author vividly describes her dramatic and colorful characters as complex and complicated. Sally Harrison and her daughter Ella have been estranged for 22 years. Sally has added a special chosen book for Ella, with a heartfelt memorable comment for each year, and kept it in a special library in her house. It is only when Ella is forced to return home after a disaster when her mother falls, that she becomes aware that there had been such a significant library. Most of the books had been destroyed by water, but Ella learns many things about her mother. As Ella becomes aware of her mother’s life, neighbors and friends, she wants to create a memorable and special surprise for Sally.
I appreciate how the author discusses second chances, forgiveness, communication, the importance of family, friends, and neighbors, hope and love. I love how literacy can show us a new chapter and perspective on life. I highly recommend this heartfelt and emotional novel.
