The timeline for this story is in 1946, and goes to the present and future when it pertains to the characters and events. The story mostly takes place on a wild and beautiful island called Sable Island. The author vividly describes both the beauty and danger of the sea and island, and her dramatic and colorful characters. The winds and rough sea have caused shipwrecked boats and lost lives. Beautiful gardens and wild horses are part of this island treasure.
There are secrets, betrayals, lies, lack of communication, and danger. The female protagonist, Emma Clarkson has lived with her father on Sable Island, and dreams to be able to leave for the mainland to attend the university. That changes when there is a shipwreck and Captain Oliver Harris and his crew are saved. Oliver is older than Emma, and has a wife and children. Although both are attracted to each other, Oliver has to go back to sea. Soon a Veterinarian comes to the island to work, and study the horses. The Veterinarian seems to have secrets, but Emma does marry him. Unfortunately her dreams of going to the university are put on hold.
I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of forgiveness, second chances, courage, the importance of family, dreams, love and hope. I highly recommend this thought-provoking and memorable novel.
