Mary Morris, the Author of “The Red House” has written a captivating, memorable and thought-provoking novel. The genres for this book are Historical Fiction, Fiction, Italy, Cultural Heritage, Family Life Fiction, and Mystery. In this well written novel, Mary Morris vividly describes the plot, the landscapes, scenery and the dark and colorful characters. This story takes place in the present and goes back to World War Two. What would you do if your mother just disappeared? Everything was left behind, and the only clues that you can think of come from her paintings?

The protagonist of the story, Laura has obsessed over her mother’s disappearance for years. Laura feels that something is missing from both her marriage and her work. Laura decides to return to Italy, where her mother Viola came from. Laura seems to go back in time (in her mind) to when there was a little known war in Italy known as Italy’s Second World War. There is a picture in current time of a red house that her mother had painted. Somehow, Laura is determined to find this red house.

Mary Morris bring Viola to life in past Italy, with the truth of what she was hiding. Laura does discover the Red House and what it represents. She also meets several people who knew Viola.

The author discusses topics such as Coming of Age, betrayals, war, secrets, danger, death, loss ,the importance of family, friends, love and hope. I highly recommend this amazing novel.
