The author introduces us to a meek and frightened Beth Robbins, who fears her husband Jack Robbins. Jack is frequently drunk, and often takes his anger out on his wife. One regrettable night, there is an accident, that involves both Jack and Beth. The investigating Police officer is Graham Jackson, the only Black Police officer at the time. Many of the characters feel alone, and have the need to connect. After the accident, Jack disappears and leaves Beth with no money, and feeling very alone. The Police are looking for Jack.
I appreciate how Dawn Reno Langley discusses important issues such as physical and emotional abuse, honesty, communication, self-worth, alcoholism, ageism, racism, the importance of family, friends, community, love and hope. I highly recommend this thought-provoking novel.
