WOW! T. Kingfisher, the Author of “SNAKE-EATER” has written a unique, captivating and pulsating novel. The Genres for this book are: Paranormal Fantasy,Dark Fantasy, Contemporary Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Suspense, and Satire. I enjoyed this well-written novel and imaginative narrative, and I appreciate the author’s vivid, colorful, dark and frightening characters. The characters bind this story together and are complex, complicated, flawed, and may be not what they seem. I love the symbolic forms, or “spirits” or “God”-like or supernatural forms that are used to depict and describe the characters. There appears to be a “mental” and “physical” side for some of the characters. My feelings while reading this story ran the gamut from horrified, amused, or pensive. There is a subtle wit or humor in this story. There also is a psychological side.
The protagonist of the story Selina, runs away with her dog, from an unhappy relationship, and finds herself in Quartz Creek looking for her aunt that is deceased. Selina encounters different characters and finds herself in her aunt’s house. The house is shared by scorpions, snakes and other creepy creatures. The real question or mystery is “Who Controls the House?” With the help of new friends, Selina gets food, and plants, and starts to be part of the community. Someone or something is trying to scare Selina. Selina has to figure out what is wanted from her, and how she can be safe.
I appreciate that the author describes the importance of friendship, neighbors, community a, sense of purpose and worth, communication and hope. I highly recommend this thought-provoking novel to others.
