Sandra Freels, the Author of “Anneka Jans in the New World” has written an intriguing and informative Historical Fiction novel based on true events. The timeline for this story is approximately 1630, and takes place mostly in the colony of New Netherland. The author vividly describes the landscape, the hardships, and complex and complicated characters. Rules were changing, and men and women weren’t treated equally. At that time in history, there were Indians (Native Americans), who traded with the settlers, until eventual fighting and wars. Black people were free, until slaves were brought to this new world.

The female protagonist, Anneke Jans comes to this new world with her husband and children looking for a prosperous and fresh start. With the wilderness, unknown elements, and the need for survival, Anneke proves to be a strong, courageous and capable woman. Anneke has to make her own rules. After her husband, dies, Anneke is pressured to marry again, and has more children. This is a perfect book to read as New York experiences its 400th Birthday. I appreciate the research that the author has done. The author discusses how women had to be resourceful, fearless, and grounded in order to survive. I would recommend this thought-provoking book.
