
Wow! Linda Stasi, the Author of “The Descendant” has written an exhilarating, unique, memorable, captivating and intriguing novel. Linda Stasi also writes with wit and humor. In this amazing well written saga of Italian Immigrants, Linda Stasi uses poetic/author’s license to tell a masterpiece of a story based on her ancestors. The author visually describes the locations, scenery and plot, and vividly describes the colorful, and dramatic characters as complex, complicated, flawed. Some of the women characters are courageous, brave and heroic, and some of the characters are greedy, manipulative, quirky and unbalanced. Some of the Italian Immigrants from Sicily are lured to Colorado, America with promises of land and wealth. Mariano Barbero comes to America and finds himself working in dangerous and dirty mines. He and other men are treated as low class citizens and live in poor conditions. The women and children follow. Mariano Barbera and his wife Maria work hard to survive the conditions in this situation. Next, they find themselves working on a cattle ranch. Maria has many children and one of them, Flo is attached to a Wolf that she believes is her guiding spirit. Another child has seizures, and Mariano has difficulty coping. The family knows how to make illegal alcohol, and that helps them financially. Unfortunately the Mafia becomes involved, and there is danger. In this novel there are betrayals, lies, secrets, threats, danger from people and nature.
The family is forced to move to Brooklyn, and Flo is devastated that her Wolf, “Blue” is not allowed. Mariano has made poor financial decisions, and the family lives over a restaurant. Maria is one courageous lady, that holds her family together, provides safety and common sense for them. There are twists and turns, unexpected and surprising events. I loved everything about this memorable and thought-provoking book, and highly recommend it!
