Michelle Heard, The Author of “Things That Break Us” has written a memorable, heartrending, emotional and captivating novel. I appreciate that the author provides a note about sensitive and triggering content in the book, and to read responsibly. In this well written novel, the author vividly describes the plot, and the dramatic and colorful characters. The characters are complicated, complex, and flawed. One of the female protagonists, Nova Allen gets a phone call from her best friend Rachel, asking Nova to come to Rachel’s house. Rachel Rowe, and her brother Easton Rowe, have been in Nova’s life since they were children.Rachel is a single Mom to Lainey.

This is the perfect time for Nova to leave her home, as she has been in an abusive relationship. She has bruises to show. Nova and Rachel have been like sisters, and Nova is Lainey’s Godmother. Nova has been in love with Easton for years (although he doesn’t realize this). Easton is a popular movie star, and is now a millionaire. He has taken care of his sister and niece. Unfortunately Rachel has tragic news for all of them. She has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and wants to prepare both Nova and Easton to take care of Lainey.

Both Nova and Easton are physically attracted to one another, but with Rachel’s poor diagnosis, and Nova’s anxiety from her past relationships, this becomes complicated. also involved is the Paparazzi and Press.

I appreciate the way that Michelle Heard discusses the importance of family, friends, emotional support, getting psychological help, love, faith and hope. I highly recommend this thought-provoking novel.
