Susan Coventry, the Author of “Til Taught by Pain” has written an intriguing, captivating and enlightening novel. The Genres for this well written novel are Historical Fiction, Biographical Historical Fiction, and Historical Biographical Fiction. The author bases this on a true story, and vividly describes the hospital settings, historical settings, costumes, furnishing, food, and the dramatic characters. Dr. William Stewart Halsted is both obsessed and ambitious in his surgical career performing difficult surgical operations. Looking for new ways of using anesthesia, besides ether and chloroform, he uses himself as a guinea pig, and injects himself with cocaine. Dr. Halsted is fortunate to have some professional friends that support him. He meets a young, new nurse, Caroline Hampton, who is dedicated, empathic and a hard worker. The two work in the hospital together, and get married. Dr. Halsted is upfront about his use of drugs, and Caroline is convinced that his promise to stop using these drugs will work.

I appreciate how the author discusses the importance of family, friends, getting medical and psychological help, love and hope. This is a memorable story of ambition, faith, and dedication. I learned some things I didn’t know before. Addiction has been and is a hugh problem. I highly recommend this informative book
