“Kate’s War” by Linda Stewart Henley, Author is a captivating and thought-provoking, well-written novel. Linda Stewart Henley discusses the importance of singing and music in literature, and war. In this Historical Fiction novel, the author vividly describes the scenery, plot and the dramatic and colorful characters. During the turbulent time of war in London, there was tragedy and confusion. Many of the children were sent were sent without their parents to the country side, where it was thought that the children would escape the bombing and destruction.

The protagonist, Kate Murphy, 20 years old, has a beautiful voice and loves to sing, and wants to be a professional singer and leave home. When World War Two comes to England, Kate’s plans change, and she stays home. After a previous emotional upset, Kate has developed a breathing problem when singing. Kate is teaching part time at a school, when a Jewish parent asks Kate to promise to take care of her daughter if anything happens to her.

Kate has to find the courage to take the responsibility for this young girl, and meets the challenges of the times and adulthood. Kate also uses music and singing to help keep the children and neighbors feel more secure during some dark times. I highly recommend this memorable novel.
