Wow! Caroline C. Barney, the author of “The Return of the Malpeds” has written a magical fantasy book appropriate for all readers of all ages. This is the second book in the series, and can be read alone, but so much better after reading the first book. “Return of the Malpeds” has so much symbolism of what can be positive in our world. As a retired teacher, this reviewer, can see so many lessons that children can observe and discuss.

In “Return of the Malpeds” we re-visit the Trebors and the Land of Bori. The Trebors live in a neighborhood in their tree, which is their community. They work together, make decisions together and have good leadership. The Trebor Elders try to keep everyone safe. Safe means being close to home, or the tree. I love the way the author vividly describes the characters, the landscape, and the community. The author stresses the importance of family, community, neighborhood, friends, and working together in peace and harmony. Also discussed is many better choices, forgiveness and second chances.

The Malpeds try to tempt The Trebors. The Malpeds have come back in another form and try to entice the children in playing with them, and doing fun tricks. The Malpeds state that they are different and mean no harm. What do they really want? This was such a memorable, entertaining and thought-provoking tale that I would highly recommend to read.
