Amanda Prowse, the author of “Waiting to Begin” has written a captivating, emotional, and thought-provoking novel. The genres for this novel are domestic fiction, women’s fiction and fiction. There are two timelines in this story, one is set in 1984, and the other is set in 2021. The author describes her dramatic characters as complex, complicated and flawed.

Isn’t it amazing to see what happens the longer that one tries to bury the past and hide secrets. As time passes, the secrets seem to get darker, deeper, and the cause and effect becomes more complicated. The protagonist in this story Bessie is a happy 16 year old in 1984, and on her birthday, she finds that she has been betrayed by people that she loves. In 2021, Bessie is now 53 years old, and the secrets that she has held onto, cause another traumatic birthday.

Bessie has two wonderful children and her marriage to Mario is so strained that she fears that the ties will snap. She has the support of her parents and now speaks on occasion to her brother, who used to be very close to her.

As life goes on, Bessie is waiting for happiness again, and she realizes that she may have to chance dealing with her past and secrets to move ahead in the future. I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of honesty, communication, forgiveness, second chances and hope. Also mentioned is the importance of family, friendship, and love. I highly recommend this book to others. Be sure to have some Kleenex on hand.
