Susan Dennis, the author of “The Secret Field” has written an intriguing and captivating novel. The genres for this novel are thriller, suspense and Women’s Detective Fiction. The timeline for this story is set in the author’s present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters and events. The characters are described as complex and complicated, quirky, and dangerous. I appreciate that the author vividly describes her characters in such a diverse way.
The protagonist in the story, Kari is a loner, and lives with her two dogs and a cat in a ranch that was once part of the Raintree Plantation. Kari is subject to panic attacks, and takes medication and herbal teas to calm her. She is forced to speak with her neighbors, when some dangerous activity occurs. One of the Raintrees who had sold the land is determined to find some treasured coins that he believes are on Kari’s parcel of land. He will do anything to get to that!
Kari is estranged from her mentally unbalanced mother, and now faces terrible danger from her neighbor and his new wife. There are secrets, and deadly threats that Kari must face. The weak protagonist is forced to become stronger in order to survive. The author does mention the importance of family and friends. I would recommend this suspenseful novel.
