Wow! Christine Gunderson, the Author of “Behind White Picket Fences” has written a captivating, intriguing, intense, and memorable novel. I love that there are several Genres: Mystery, Suspense, Friendship, Cozy Mystery, Wit, Contemporary and Fiction. In this well written novel, the author vividly descripes the setting, the scenery, and the dramatic, colorful, complex and complicated characters. There are betrayals, lies, secrets, danger, twists and turns, adventure and dysfunctional, deadly and quirky characters.
Kiersten Clever, her husband and four boys have moved to a new area, and Kiersten feels overwhelmed. She is constantly driving her children for after school activities, and appointments. Her husband is working and on the road, and she wishes for simpler times. Kiersten meets another neighbor Piper, (and her family)who is on leave from her job. Piper’s daughter is being threatened by another student. Piper goes to speak to the Principal, with little action done. Piper has had threats from her job, and is very tense. Kiersten also meets another parent Rosamund, an author and single parent. Rosamund’s daughter is being made fun of in school. The three neighbors become part of a sisterhood, and realize that they need a time out from their hectic lives and set up a private school,”The Beaverbrook Academy for Inquiring Minds”. This is home schooling, and much thought goes into this.
Kirsten finds boxes with old diaries, and the diaries reveal dark secrets, and danger. The friends and their children are trying to get used to the new routines. Piper gets a box addressed to her with some inappropriate living things. The same thing happens to Kiersten. Letters with threats are stuck on their trees. Comments from certain neighbors telling them that the neighborhood is not safe anymore concerns them. There is a foreboding feeling of imminent danger and dread.
I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of friendship, community, family, courage, love and hope. I highly recommend this amazing novel.
