Kudos to Brenda Janowitz, the Author of “The Introvert’s Guide to Kissing in Europe” for writing such a captivating, intriguing, and memorable Young Adult Book. I am a HUGE fan of Brenda Janowitz, and I was thrilled to read this well written and entertaining story. Today, the word of the new high school graduating class seems to be “GAP YEAR”. The author vividly describes the countries, sights, landmarks, foods, liquor, transportation, and the colorful and dramatic cast of characters. The main female protagonist, Emily Tannenbaum graduated as the High School Valedictorian, and has a place held for her at Dartmouth, and is taking a GAP year off to travel to many of the countries in Europe to follow where her Grandmother and Aunt were singers and entertainers. She carries a diary to write everything for her sister, who had passed away. Usually the timid Emily, seems to come out of her shell and joins other small groups of young people. One is an influencer who takes reels and pictures for Social Media. Emily creates a list of the things she plans to accomplish with her new friends. It is a whole new world to her. They meet young men and some other women.
Emily’s grandmother is very with it, and encourages Emily to have new experiences and fun. There are some secrets that Emily’s grandmother holds close to her heart. Of course, new relationships can cause heartbreak and growth. Emily gets the opportunity to meet new people, travel to interesting and amazing places, and eat and drink new food. At times when Emily chats with her friends at home in college, she wonders if she should be home. This story resonates for me, as many years ago, I went by myself to Europe with a tour of strangers. I was twenty, and knew no one, and I did have a memorable and wonderful time. I highly recommend this heartfelt and thought-provoking novel.
