Linda’s Book Obsession Reviews “In Light of the Summit” by Jamie McGillen, On tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours
Jamie McGillen the author of “In the Light of the Summit” has written an intriguing and thought-provoking novel about young adults in the 1890’s. The genres for this story are Historical fiction, Young Adult Exploration, and Fiction. This is the second novel in this series, but can be read alone. I look forward to reading the first book in the series. The author describes her characters as determined, brave, flawed, each having their own set of problems.
One of the protagonists in this novel, Annie Gallagher’s dream is to reach the summit of Mt. Rainer. Her first attempt failed when she twisted her leg. She is working hard with her fiancé/husband Ben. In 1890, there are people that feel that Annie’s dreams and actions defy what a young woman’s goal in life should be. Her family gets threats, and it becomes dangerous if she continues her mission in many ways. Annie is a very determined and courageous woman. She is determined to finish the climb, no matter what. At this particular time, Ben is very encouraging and supportive, as is her immediate family.
Emily, a close friend of Annie has chosen the path in her climb and descent in her life by marrying a man of means to ensure she would be wealthy and enjoy nice things. She wonders if she should have listened to her heart, and married someone else. Emily’s husband gets sick and dies, and Emily finds out that her dreams are nothing but a smoke screen. She owes money on her husband’s estate, since he didn’t have it.
I appreciate that the author discusses how women were treated in an unequal and unfair way in the 1890’s. She also discusses the importance of self-worth, working towards your goals, the importance of family, friends, love and hope. I would highly recommend this easy to read heartfelt story.
