Mary Keliikoa, the author of “Denied” has written an edgy, intense, and suspenseful novel. The genres for this novel are mystery, suspense, romance, and fiction. The timeline for this story is set in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated.
The protagonist PI Kelly Pruett is persistent, and courageous. Kelly manages to raise her deaf daughter, sharing the responsibility with her ex-husband Jeff. Kelly and Jeff are friends now, but at times there is tension, especially when Kelly’s handsome boyfriend Kyle is around. Arlene, Kelly’s ex mother-in- law wishes that Kelly and Jeff would be together. Often, Kelly goes on investigation with her dog.
This is the second in the PI Kelly Pruett series, but can be read alone. Kelly follows in her late father’s footsteps, and tries to fill them by being as successful in being a detective. A pregnant acquaintance has asked Kelly to help locate her missing father. Kelly is totally unaware of the dangers that await her. There are twists and turns, adventure, threats, and murder. Also involved are the Mafia, and other mean-spirited characters and greedy characters. The more involved Kelly becomes, the more danger she is in.
I would highly recommend this intense mystery to other readers.
