Rea Frey, the author of “Secrets of Our House” has written an intense, intriguing, and captivating novel. The genres for this book are Domestic Fiction, Domestic Thriller, and Fiction. The timeline for this novel is in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events. The story takes place in a Black house in North Carolina in the mountains, and Chicago is also mentioned. The author describes her dramatic characters are complex and complicated. There are deep, dark secrets and betrayals.

Although the Black House and Property is supposed to be for relaxation, this house seems to be ominous and is the setting of the character’s secrets. This is a thriller and had me glued to my seat. The author vividly describe nature in the mountains as dangerous, with bears and other threats, and dangerous weather conditions. Perhaps the most danger comes from the characters. This is a book about nature vs. nuture.

Desi and her husband have arrived at the house to try and remedy what has been ailing in their marriage. Their daughter is coming of age and ready to start college. Desi’s husband has taught his daughter many of the skills of survival. Although the mountains and woods have a certain beauty to them, there also is a deadly threat.

There are twists and turns, and deep secrets if revealed can destroy the family. This well written book describes what a family, love, and hope are about. Can there be forgiveness and second chances?

I would highly recommend this thought-provoking, dramatic and memorable novel for others.
