Linda’s Book Obsession Reviews “Scarlett Carnation” by Laila Ibrahim, Amazon Publishing, April 2022, On Tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours
Laila Ibrahim, the Author of “Scarlett Carnation” has written a thought-provoking, poignant and memorable novel. The genres for this novel are Historical Fiction, Family Fiction, and Friend Fiction. The timeline for this story is set in 1915, during World War One, and goes back to the Civil War, and to the past, when it pertains to the characters and events. The author describes her dramatic characters as complex and complicated. I love that the author discusses the importance of sisterhood, family, friends, positive conviction, love and hope. Also discussed are important topics of prejudice, obstacles, discrimination and unfair laws, some of which are still evident today. I do appreciate that the author gives us a feeling of hope. Red Carnations when worn, often indicated that women had sons involved in World War One.
The protagonists in the story, May and Naomi are extended family through their grandmothers that date back to the Civil War. They are also friends that are supportive of each other, even though they have problems and obstacles in their lives. Both are courageous, and are looking to rise above the injustices and unfair laws, and prejudice in society. I would recommend this inspirational read.
