Linda Mahkovec, the author of “The Notebooks of Honora Gorman, Fairytales, Whimsy, and Wonder,” has written a mesmerizing, captivating and magical novel. The Genres for this novel are Literary Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, and Women’s Fiction. There is an essence of Fantasy, and an Essence of Magic sprinkled throughout. The author vividly describes her colorful and dramatic characters, the destinations, and scenery in this novel. The characters are described as complex and complicated. Linda Mahkovec is a talented storyteller that focuses on the positive, following your dreams, and hope. I appreciate the symbolism, and the author’s love of art and music that is part of the story.

The protagonist of this story, Honora Gorman, is an introvert, wishing to be a writer. She keeps journals and notebooks, and never gives up hope for writing the perfect fairytale or story. In her journey, Honora works at many jobs to pay the rent. Honora loves New York City, and Queens, and travels and observes all the details. She dreams of traveling the world. On the train, Honora differentiates between the day and night, light and darkness, and notices the beauty all around.

Honora and the two sides of her personality, Honey and Nora, write in the notebooks the magical words that make her world. When Honora gets frustrated, she picks herself up, and starts again. The ending often causes a new beginning for her. I appreciate the author’s message, to constantly dream, think positive, and have hope. I would highly recommend this beautifully written novel.
