The author vividly describes the tragic setting, landscape, and the dark and dramatic characters. The characters are complex and complicated. In this World War Two Historical Fiction novel, there are betrayals, twists and turns,spies, adventure, danger, and death. There are also some courageous and brave characters. The female protagonist, Marigold McGrath is 17 years old when her mother dies, and her father seems to be on the side of the Germans. Marigold makes some mistakes, and decides to find herself in London. One of Marigold’s passions and strengths is her love of taking pictures. She has been mentored by a famous photographer, and takes pictures of Kindertransport children. She also works for Edward R. Morrow. Marigold had been involved in helping the Jewish people get supplies. Marigold falls in love with Joop, a Dutch student who starts to work with the Resistance.
When the Blitz begins, Marigold shows growth and courage. I highly recommend this intense and thought-provoking book.
