Terri Lewis, the Author of “When They Came Home” has written a memorable, heartfelt, and thought-provoking book. This is a significant book that reminds us the many soldiers that served their country in World War One, that had many struggles. The Genres for this Book are: Literary Fiction, Historical Fiction, and World War One Historical Fiction. Milton really has no idea, when he goes to fight in World War One, what lies ahead. He thinks of his favorite girl, and farm animals. When the reality of injured and dead soldiers on both sides hits him, he is shell-shocked, and has lost so much of himself. Milton meets Edith in a tiny town, and she decides to be his wife when he works on her family farm. Loud sounds set Milton off, and often the once talkative, chatty, Milton is very silent. Edith and Milton have two daughters, and as time passes, Milton suffers from PSTD and tragic memories. PSTD is not recognized at this time, and Milton has to be hospitalized. The government threatens to stop payment, claiming that Milton had a heart condition before. The unbearable panic attacks and his catatonic reaction seem to be brushed off. I appreciate how the Author discusses the difficult of fighting a war, and coming home, the difficulties for families to adjust, and how important mental health and therapy are needed. Edith was a strong and courageous woman, left to pick up the pieces and save her family. I highly recommend this book.
