What is your motivation or inspiration for writing “Dreaming in Chocolate?
I knew I wanted to tell a mother/daughter story and that it would have a magical component. But the story really didn’t come together until I started writing Ella, my protagonist’s eight-year-old daughter. She was just so fun and alive in my head, thanks to my oldest niece who Ella’s personality was modeled after. Once I figured her out, the rest of the story began to take shape.
- What would you like your readers to take away with them after reading “Dreaming in Chocolate?”
I would love for readers to finish the book with a sense of hope and the idea that no matter what life throws at you, you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be. Even if it’s not where you expected.
- What are some of your favorite hobbies or things you like to do in your downtime?
I have a day job and write in most of my free time! But when I can break away from the computer, my husband and I love going to concerts or spending the day at the beach. There’s not much batter than taking a doughnut and a cup of coffee to the beach and just sitting and watching the waves for a few hours.
- Do you have a new book in the works, and can you share something about it?
I am currently working on a new magical women’s fiction novel that revolves around two estranged sisters and family magic that allows them to erase love from people’s lives to help those people move on from bad relationships. It’s set on a small (fictional) barrier island off the coast of NC and involves a dilapidated lighthouse, bourbon pound cake and a small beach cottage the sisters are forced to share.
- What are your favorite genres to read?
As I’m sure you can guess, I really love strange, magical stories, both women’s fiction and young adult. I’m also a big fan of contemporary fiction with a little bit of romance and family stories.
- Do you have any special recipes using chocolate that you would like to share?
Ooh, one of the things I love most about writing about magical food is “researching” recipes. I have a lot of really amazing recipes on my Pinterest board for Dreaming in Chocolate, which you can check out here: https://www.pinterest.com/sbcrispell/dreaming-in-chocolate-novel-inspiration/. One of my favorites that I’ve made many, many times are these dark chocolate sea salt caramels: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/145030050484621900/. They are so yummy.
