The timeline for this novel starts in 1940 and continues for the next several decades. Barbara Conrey describes her dramatic characters as complex and complicated. There are betrayals, tragedy, and twists and turns. The protagonist of the story, Maggie Bryan, lives through heartbreak. When the tells her parents that she is pregnant, she is disinherited and thrown out. The father of her baby is killed the same day. Maggie is depending on her brother Sam to help her. She still has to finish high school and work. Sam’s wife has given Maggie an ultimatum, and has made Maggie’s life miserable.
Maggie finds that her teacher is available to listen to her. After more tragedy, Maggie is determined to move on, and keep her past and present a secret. As I was reading, I was hoping for good things for Maggie. I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of family, friendship, forgiveness, second chances, love and hope. The author also discusses the difficulties in the 1949’s and in small towns that often could be difficult for a young woman. Maggie continued to have courage and show hope. I would recommend this memorable and thought-provoking book to others.
