OMG! Sara Goodman Confino, the Author of “Off the Record” has written a captivating, witty, intriguing, thrilling, and powerful novel. I loved everything about this well-written novel! The timeline for this book is set in 1962. This is the time of the Cold War, and it is exceptionally difficult for a young Jewish woman, or any woman, to get a job as a journalist. The Genres for this novel are: Romance, Historical Fiction, Jewish Humor, Mystery, Suspense, Adult Workplace, and Literary Fiction. The author vividly describes the location, setting, timeline, and the dramatic and colorful characters. The characters are complex, complicated, flawed, and quirky. There are some secrets, lies, betrayals, and twists and turns.
One of the female protagonists, Judy Greenberg has gone to college, and her Jewish Mother expected her to get a “MRS” degree. Instead, Judy finds herself in a typing pool, because she can type at least 90 words a minute. Judy’s real goal is to be a journalist. When Judy is upstairs temporarily working for another man, she answers his private phone, and is confused when she writes down the message from a man with a Russian accent. One of the writing Journalists comes to the typing pool, to get Judy to type his articles, since she is so proficient. Jack Fields turns out to be able to partner with Judy in discovering possible treason, and also can pass as a “date” on Friday night Shabbat, to hopefully keep her Mother from bugging her. I loved her Grandmother, who is so very with it. Judy does go to some clubs with the other female workers to gain information. Sometime Jack and Judy will go “dancing”, while investigating dangerous suspects.
There are quite a few surprises that certainly had me shocked! I loved every moment of this book, and highly recommend this.
